Ivan Daines’ Country Music Picknic

Rodeo legend Ivan Daines and his lovely wife, Kay, hosted a heck of a shindig at the 30th anniversary of his Country Music Picknic at the Daines Rodeo Ranch! Folks from across the West pulled in and enjoyed four days of entertainment and performances by such greats as Ian Tyson, Corb Lund, Tim Hus, Brett Kissel, Danny Hooper, Allen Christie Band, Michael Carey, Denver Daines, Mike Puhallo and our own Hugh McLennan – just to name a few! There was plenty of action in the arena too, ranging from cowboy mounted shooting, ranch horse and Alberta’s best horse competition, barrel racing, team penning and colt starting demos, (even one in the pouring rain). Ivan declared both trainers as winners in the colt competition and awarded a buckle to both participants, Kent Williamson and Joe Butterfield.

Kent Williamson doing the groundwork during the colt starting challenge. Within the hour, Kent had saddled the young mare and even though the clouds opened up, he calmly rode the youngster through the pelting rain.

Danny Hooper and Brett Kissel with Riley Tubbs put on a great performance Sunday afternoon at the Picknic. Danny is the new CFCW morning man (with Sharon Mallon) and a superbly talented and funny guy. Brett is a wonderful talent and one of the hottest rising stars in country music.
