The Really Big Show
Canadian Clyde Ride girls rule!
This is one of the biggest shows to hit the exhibition circuit ever quite literally. Canadian Clyde Ride is ranked first in the world to showcase draft horses under saddle to a choreographed dance. Canadian Clyde Ride is based at Cedar Springs Ranch, about a one-hour commute from downtown Vancouver. The all-female show riders range in age from 16 to 65+ and are mounted on matching bay Clydesdales. The team currently practices up to three times a week, stepping up the programs in preparation for an event.
The Canadian Clyde Ride was formed in 2000, the idea of founder, rider and creative director Wendee Cristante. The team’s biggest victory to date is winning the 2003 Calgary Stampede Parade “Best Horse Entry Award.” In 2004/2005 the Canadian Clyde Ride will be attending the grand daddy of all parades, The Tournament of Roses Parade, January 1, 2005 in Pasadena, California.

The Mini-Mustang Gangs Ride Again

Get ready to wrangle! The Mini-Mustangs of Provost, AB are on the road again. Spokesperson and organizer, Mel Lawes of Provost, AB, came up with the idea a few years ago, after seeing a similar event in Southern Saskatchewan with teams of kids recruited from the rodeo audience to catch and ride ‘wild’ ponies. Mel was watching and thought it would be a great idea if the competitors were actual cowboy kids with a rodeo background. Age and size of the wranglers are a factor but average age is usually 12 and under. The first time out of the chutes for the hand-picked teams was in Macklin, SK two years ago. The pint-sized wranglers’ names are recognized in the rodeo world and include the teams of Lawes, Laye, Fladd, Watt, Jickling and Bowers. The team is made up of three youngsters who try and tackle the wildest of ponies and always leave the audience roaring with laughter.

Corb Lund stones ‘em between the pipes
Time to switch to whiskey in the beer league
When Corb Lund isn’t entertaining music lovers with his unique country style, he’s bragging about his skill as goaltender for the Corb Lund Band Hockey team in the Edmonton Musicians Green Pepper Hockey League. According to Corb, in a recent informal ‘press release’ his team triumphed over seven other teams in the league playoffs, where he posted a perfect season in net. Mind you, due to his rigid touring schedule this past season, he only dressed for this one game but did manage a shut-out. He readily admits that the team did very well without him and congratulations are extended to team captain, Craig Nickel and the rest of the Canucks on their outstanding season. If the 2004/05 NHL season doesn’t happen, hockey fans might have to take in a few of the GPHL games.
Whoa Baby!
Congratulations go out to two rodeo families who have been busy with midnight feedings and diaper changes. Bareback Champ Darrell Cholach and wife Bev of Hanna, AB are proud first-time parents. They welcomed daughter Taylor Margaret Cholach into their family on April 11. Rod and Jennifer Warren of Big Valley, AB have added a third little cowboy to their ranks with the birth of a son, Landon Richard Warren on April 6. Rod was recently the co-champion at Calgary Stampede’s Rodeo Royal, Roughstock.
