Jesse Byrne — in the dirt and on top of the world in Vegas

Byrne’ing up the PBR

Picked by the top bull riders in Canada to put his life on the line at the Canadian Finals, bullfighter Jesse Byrne received a call that forced him to make a decision that will affect the rest of his career.

The 22-year-old Sask. athlete was ranked sixth in the world by the PBR. When two of the top four bullfighters were injured, Jesse was called up to fight in the PBR Finals in Las Vegas — slated for the same dates as the CFR.

“It was an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down,’’ he said. “I was really looking forward to coming to Edmonton, but I had to pass it up,” Byrne said in an interview with Dwayne Erickson. His appearance at the PBR World Finals got him international television coverage, plus a cheque for around $15,000 USD — some four times what he would have received at CFR and for two less performances.

Jesse is the son of Hall of Famer Ryan Byrne, the man who set the bar in bullfighting.
