Who's Hot

Dec-Jan 2004

Two Guys and a Girl Rein Supreme
There's some hot young talent coming up through the snaffle bit ranks and they made their mark at the recent 2003 Canadian Supreme, held from October 1st through the 5th at Westerner Park in Red Deer, AB.

These young riders are the ones to watch out for in the next few years. Cayley Wilson, from Abbottsford, BC, won two classes; the Three year-old Open Snaffle Bit Futurity and the Limited Open, aboard My Muddy Valentine.

Two other riders in the snaffle bit event had the audience's full attention: Dale Clearwater hails from Lacombe, AB, was second in the herd work and was fifth in the aggregate. Dale trains with Brad Pedersen and rides Peppy's Button Down.

Stephanie Fitchett from Vernon, BC, the only female exhibitor in the class, placed third in the reining work riding Chex This Trade. Stephanie rides with Dave Batty out of Vernon, BC.

Katy Lucas Throws 'em for a loop at the Calgary Junior Miss Pageant
As the daughter of successful calf roper and team roper, Smokin' Joe Lucas, Katy Lucas figured she had a unique talent to showcase in the Calgary Junior Miss Pageant. There were 66 girls entered, aged ten to 14, and only ten would be chosen to show their talent. She'd had five years of dance classes, but a lifetime of practice at roping, so that's what she chose as her talent. "She figured all the other girls would choose dance," said mom, Sheona. So they cleaned up the roping dummy and the tying dummy for the competition! Katy was one of only four girls to win a $500 modeling package, and there were plenty of girls interested in following in her footsteps. Way to go Katy, we're proud you chose to dally instead of dance!
