Who's Hot

August-September 2005

Cowboy Wedding at the Devil's Head Ranch

Hundreds of guests had their fingers crossed waiting for a break in the weather so rodeo champ Billy Richards and Olympic hopeful and member of the National Skeleton team, Melissa Hollingsworth, could take their wedding vows outside as planned on the lawn of Billy's historic family home, the Devil's Head Ranch. Luck was riding with them as the sun broke through the clouds long enough for the ceremony and photographs.

Jimmy Richards, Billy's brother, emceed the reception and he repeated the rumour that was going around the wedding; that God must like Billy and Melissa to bring out the sun. He quashed it when he commented, "No, he's just afraid of Mother."

Asked if the couple were now on their honeymoon, Doug replied, "No, they're not going on a honeymoon. It must be a family tradition, Jill's still waiting for ours."

Team Roping at the Schmidt House

Ronald Schmidt and friends are hosting their second annual team roping youth camp, T.R.A.S.H. for Kids, August 15-17, 2005 at the Schmidt Ranch west of Barrhead, Alberta.

Thirty spots are open to children 10 - 16 with some roping experience. They can learn from some of the best professional team ropers available.

Imagine what young ropers can learn from such seasoned veterans as Joe Lucas, Dalton Kraft, Troy Fischer, Daryn Knapp and Steel DePaoli. As well, horse trainers David and Leonard Schmidt and Murdock Keith will be teaching the finer points of teamwork between the roper and the horse that will carry him to the pay window.

The winner's edge is all about control, and there is no one better qualified than Sports Medicine doctor and Olympic athlete coach, Dr. Bob Steadward. Dr. Steadward has also lent his innumerable talents to this training camp and his experience and enthusiasm will help these kids to keep the sport of team roping fun and rewarding.

The Schmidt Ranch is located 17 miles west of Barrhead on Highway 18. Registration is $100. Phone (780) 674-5288 for registration or more information. Kids must bring their own horse.
