TOP HAND COMPETITION HEATS UP

Working cowboys from B.C. interior ranches will gather again at Historic Hat Creek Ranch September 13, to once again ride for the brand in the hotly contested "Top Hand" competition.

The cowboys compete in teams of two in seven events: the cowboy stew cook-off; gate opening from horseback; ranch penning; ranch roping; ranch cutting; saddle horse race and the cowhide race. Along with the coveted "Top Hand" title, a custom belt buckle and cash prizes are also awarded.

The "Top Hands" for 2003 are defending champions, Curtis Zimmerlee and Monica Wyssen, riding for the 89 Cattle Company. A close second were the Ashcroft Ranch team of Maurice and Dodds, while the 2002 champions, Peterson and McKay from the Bar K Ranch at Prince George, placed third.

TRICKRIDING TRIO

With a whole lot of grit, natural talent - and only four lessons under their belt from famed trick rider, Jerri Duce Phillips, the Thurston boys, Sam - 8, Zeke - 9 and big brother Wyatt - 13, were a sensational hit at their debut trick riding performance at the Innisfail Rodeo.

For the first time in their successful rodeo careers, the boys' parents, Skeeter Thurston (saddle bronc - National Finals Rodeo Qualifier -1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1994, & 1995) and Lynda Shuckburgh-Thurston (barrel racing), watched from outside of the arena as their children continued the family name in the rodeo arena.
