Music of the WestBy Hugh McLennanJune-July 2006 Tried and True - a Canadian TributeBrett Kissel
This talented young Alberta ranch kid has assembled some significant singers to join him on several tracks. Corb Lund on Ian Tyson’s Navajo Rug, and the legendary Gary Fjellgaard blends his voice with Brett’s on Gary’s song, Would You Dance With This Old Cowboy. I loved a song called Who Wrote the Words (written on the old brick wall) when it came out in 1971. Larry Mercey sings this one with Brett and I love their harmony. For 27 years Tommy Hunter sang, Travellin’ Man on his CBC TV show and it’s sure nice to hear it on this album. Hank Snow’s, I’ve Been Everywhere, George Fox’s, No Trespassing’ and Paper Rosie, recorded by Gene Watson and written by Dallas Harms, as well as several more round out the collection. Brett’s acoustic guitar flat picking style is getting better all the time and he has included a neat instrumental duet with Fred Pelletier, on the well-known Cec’s Breakdown written by Cec McEchem who for so many years was a favourite on Don Messer’s Jubilee. |
