Music of the WestBy Hugh McLennanAugust-September 2005 The Drifter - Latigo
There's a real Canadian cowboy flavour to this one with songs about the high country, the horses and the people who know the windswept eastern slopes and the high timbered trails of the Canadian Rockies. Some of western Canada's finest poets have had their work set to music for this project including Glen Rafuse (The Drifter, The Lead Mare) and Mereline Griffith, (The Cyclone). If you've spent much time with Perry, chances are you've heard some of his fine poems, and he's included a couple as spoken word, one dedicated to his dad, a well-known cowboy of the last generation and Partners, is a reflection of life on the Jacobson's ranch and some of the drifting cowboys who made the place a stop over. Storytelling is one of Perry's gifts and he draws you right up close with his soft and sincere delivery. Some of the old classics included are Get Along Little Doggies, When the Work's All Done This Fall, and The Old Cow Man. Perry Jacobson and Jim Peace supply most of the vocals. Jim also plays fine lead and resonator guitar, harmonica and mandolin, while Graham Allen plays bass and does backup vocals. There's a tasteful touch of fiddle from Kyle Cridland and the sweet voice of Chris Schauer enhances vocal sound. Order this one from Perry Jacobson, 39 Riverview Close, Cochrane, Alberta T4C 1K7, or call (403) 851-0851. |
