Range & Romance

Curly Musgrave

It was great to see Curly again at The Big Cowboy Songs and Range Ballads event in Cody in April. That's where he pressed an advance copy of his latest release Range & Romance into my hand. We listened to it while we drove around the streets of Cody and again on the drive home to Kamloops. This guy just keeps getting better. In the years we've known him I've observed a profound desire for excellence in everything he does.

The deep love of the land, the cattle and the way of life comes through clearly in Return To The Fifty, inspired by an area of long held grazing allotments where Curly rides and works cattle with his friends who ranch there. "...and the shadows of the fifty hide the tears of full-grown men who rode out on misty mornings to help springtime calves a-bornin' are swept into history with the stroke of a pen." Curly's music gives real power to his words.

There's a real cross-section of ballads, and uptempo pieces, powerful lyrics and memorable melodies. Belinda Gail who joins Curly for a lot of his live performances does a fine duet on a song they co-wrote called Mail Order Bride.

The final track is a great arrangement of Rob Dinwoodie's Some Kind Of Horses. Butch Falk introduced the song to Curly and this arrangement really cooks.
