Out Where the Cowboys Ride
Shirley Field
Out Where the Cowboy’s Ride is the latest in a long line of releases from Canada’s most distinguished lady of western music. The title song is a toe tapping, swing style with words by Alberta’s Buddy Gale. Buddy’s original poems colourfully depict cowboy life and they adapt easily to Shirley’s melodies. Buddy contributes the lyrics to several more tracks on this release including Pioneers, Empty Town and There’s a Cowboy in My Heart. I really enjoyed going over this album and along with the new songs created by Buddy and Shirley, there’s an interesting cross-section of music from the past. It was great to hear Yodel Your Troubles Away. If you’re nearly as old as I am, you might remember Stud Davis using this Tim Spencer composition for a theme on his radio show back in the early fifties. Cindy Walker’s According to My Heart was a hit for Jim Reeves somewhere in the’60s and Gene Autry’s Rainbow on the Rio Colorado has been done by a host of performers including the Sons of the Pioneers. Lots of material to prove Shirley can still yodel!
