Music of the West

One Last Horse

Ryan Fritz

Ryan Fritz is the real deal. His music is influenced by his years of experience riding the ranges for some of the biggest cow outfits in the West, and now he owns his own operation in Saskatchewan. One Last Horse is his latest cd and by far his best. This collection of pure Canadian cowboy songs was recorded at Eli Barsi and John Cunningham’s Rockin’ Bar C Studios in Branson, Missouri with some of Branson’s finest pickers and players.

Ryan was a participant in the Heritage Ranch Rodeo as part of FarmFair International in Edmonton when he gave us a copy of this cd. We plugged it in for the drive home, and enjoyed it so much we played it through three times between Edmonton and Kamloops.
Ryan is really growing as a writer and singer, pushing the boundaries in songs like Still Ridin. It’s catchy, swings along and has some neat electric guitar and percussion sounds.

I asked him if the responsibilities of owning his ranch meant less time in the saddle and less inspiration for songs. He said it actually works the other way. He’s had an abundance of song ideas flowing in from somewhere. The first track to make the Spirit of the West playlist was North Range, but you’ll be hearing several more in the coming weeks. Ocean of Grass, Last of the Cowboys, Running Iron, Good Fittin’ Saddle, and Hard Running Rain are all pure cowboy and mighty listenable.

Singers of cowboy songs, take note, there are some great songs here you might want to check out for your own recording projects.

My favourite track is the plaintive and easy listening song, I’ll Be Moving On. The words, music, and feelings of this one will stay running through your mind long after you hear it.
