Music of the WestFeb-Mar 2005 EMBERS OF TIMEJean Prescott The charming Texas ranch wife with the golden voice has another winning collection with her latest CD. Jean has a knack for finding songs that are powerful in their authenticity and memorable in their melodies. Rich O'Brien lends his guiding hand to the production again. As I said once when I introduced him on stage in Branson, Missouri a few years back, "In the distant future when musicologists study the western music of our era, they'll credit Rich with having a huge influence on its sound and style." As described on the liner notes, Rich plays guitar, mandolin, percussion, background vocals and other stuff. Every track meets the strict guidelines I use for selecting the music played on Spirit of the West and I look forward to sharing most of them on the air in the coming months. Angel Wings is about the dedication of a cowboy's wife to her husband's commitment to the life he loves. It's moving, honest and will be going through your mind for weeks after you hear it. Jean's husband Gary, a good cowboy and fine songwriter, composed a beautiful ballad with an Irish influence he called Fair Blows the Wind a few years ago. Jean and Gary sent it to another award-winning singer, Belinda Gail, and Belinda embraced the song, recorded it and uses it at nearly all her live concerts. Jean has included it on this collection. There's an epic story of a cowboy returning to Colorado following the end of the civil war. He's riding the same horse that carried him through the battles with the promise that once they get back to the ranch, his horse Black Diamond will never wear a saddle again, and he keeps his promise, but not in the way he wanted. It's a deeply moving song that Jean interprets with real meaning. My absolute favourite on this fine collection is Old Hank Morgan's Place. It was the first track I played on Spirit of the West from this CD and it's worth at least a couple more spins. You can order this one from Jean's website www.jeanprescott.com or call her at (325) 583-2553. You'll be able to see Jean in person at the 2005 Kamloops Cowboy Festival. |
