Music of the West

Charlie Ewing

Cowboy Ways

A creative mind coupled with a cowboy lifestyle often leads to some well-conceived songs of the contemporary cowboy. Charlie Ewing was gathering cattle high in Alberta’s beautiful Porcupine Hills when he let his mind picture what it may have been like on those same hills a hundred years ago. At that moment, he looked up and saw a jet trail tracking across the deep blue sky and that inspired a song he calls Vaquero on this fine collection.

Charlie and his wife Sherry own and operate the SN Ranch west of Claresholm and his music seems to be a product of that environment. Cowboy Ways showcases the talent of some legendary musicians including Myron Szott and Roy Warhurst among others. The arrangements are superb and Charlie’s pleasing voice and fine original songs take you right up to the windy eastern slopes. B.S.E. Blues is a lively look at the Canadian cattle business since May of 2003 and it has received some airplay on a few big country music stations. There are a couple of good instrumental tracks including Cherokee Shuffle and the Skimmerhorn Waltz, a song Charlie wrote about the hill behind his house. As Dave Poulsen writes in the liner notes, “Charlie lives a life that allows him to combine two passions, ranching and music.” This is material that easily makes the cut for the Spirit of the West playlist. You can order it from Charlie at Box 430, Claresholm, AB TOL 0T0 or email cewing@telusplanet.net.
