Music of the West

Country Songs of the Heart

Ed Duncombe

Barry McClelland called from his cafe in High River a while back and we talked about music in general and western music from Canadian artists in particular. He mentioned a singer by the name of Ed Duncombe from High River. I wasn’t really familiar with Ed’s material so Barry mailed out a CD the other day and the listening experience was a pleasant surprise. Ed wrote all ten tracks on this CD and most of them have a classic country sound. The lyrics mainly reflect the typical theme of love gone wrong, however there are two songs here that easily qualify for the Spirit of the West playlist.

Cowboy hits the mark with lyrics and a melody that captures the feeling of a life spent on horseback. The song reflects the values of a modern day rider who works cattle through the week, rodeos on weekends, picks his guitar and sings when he has the chance. The lyric, “Cowboy is just a way of living and it’s a life that he can understand” sums up the essence of the song.

Welcome Friend is my favourite track. “He’ll find his favourite pinto standin’ in a pearly stall, the chute judge is St. Peter and the timer is St. Paul” are some of the good lines in this song about where good cowboys go after they ride across the great divide.

The other tracks aren’t what I call “western” but they are listenable and would be great to dance to with your favourite partner on Saturday night.

There’s no indication who the musician is, but there is a nice electric lead guitar running through every track. You should be able to order it by calling Ed at (403) 601-8903 or email eds_nugget@yahoo.com.
