“The Cowboy” Rodeo Writer Inducted into Hall of Fame

Canada’s premier rodeo reporter, Dwayne Erickson, will be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. He will be among 10 individuals and one team honoured for their contributions to sport.

Erickson, who at 70 still writes weekly rodeo reports for the Calgary Herald, began his sports writing career in 1957 in Penticton, B.C. and a year later moved to the Edmonton Journal. It was here he was assigned to cover his first rodeo.

“I was immediately attracted to the cowboy lifestyle,” says Erickson.

Fifty years later, Erickson joins the likes of Joe Carbury, John Down and Ron Maclean as the recipient of the 2008 Bell Memorial Award for media.

His career, which has seen him on the payroll of CBC, Winnipeg Free Press, the Edmonton Journal, Calgary Sun, Edmonton Sun and the Calgary Herald, has been punctuated with high profile assignments; serving from 1974 through 1978 as manager of media relations, advertising and publications for Edmonton’s Commonwealth Games organizing committee. He produced the first ten Canadian Professional Rodeo Association media guides and continues to contribute to the Canadian Rodeo News as well as other western magazines in Canada, the U.S. and Australia.

He is considered an outstanding journalist, brilliant copy editor and is probably the best-informed and finest rodeo reporter in the world.

“Cowboys are honest, considerate, everyday people who have the greatest sense of community that I have ever seen. It makes me so proud of this sport,” said Erickson. “Rodeo is a life teacher.”

Erickson was honoured as a Pioneer of Rodeo by the Calgary Stampede in 1997 and was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2003.

It was “standing room only” all weekend at the Mane Event, Equine Education & Trade Fair held April 25 – 27 at Westerner Park in Red Deer. Clinicians ranging from driving to dressage, reining to bitting, representing every discipline and breed attracted eager crowds of horse people from the U.S. and Canada.

The signature event, The Trainers Challenge sponsored by Canadian Cowboy Country magazine, featured three trainers: Jon Ensign of Montana, Texas; Cowboy Hall of Fame Craig Cameron and returning champion Steve Rother of Oregon. The judges included Ron Hoffman of Lakeland College, National Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee Mel Hyland and working cowboy Bob Kaufman, all from Alberta. In a competition that was very close, the grand sculpture by Diane Anderson was awarded to Steve Rother.

The biggest crowd I’ve ever been in front of in my life was an hour ago.”

Where in the World is Canadian Cowboy?

Subscriber Mark Tatar snapped this photo of his son, Kasey Tatar and Canadian Cowboy Country magazine in front of the Wawel Castle in Kraków, Poland

The Wawel Castle served as a royal residence and the site where the country’s rulers governed Poland for five centuries from 1038 until 1596.

Archaeologists have dated human habitation on the Wawel Hill to as early as the Paleolithic Age, some fifty thousand years ago. During the 15th century, the rulers of Poland took up their residence at the Wawel Hill. During the early 16th century, King Sigismund I brought in the best native and foreign artists to create this splendid Renaissance palace.

One curiosity is that Wawel Castle is considered by Hindus to be one of the seven chakras of the world, created by one of seven stones thrown by Lord Shiva.

Oldest Ranch in B.C. Sold

B.C.’s oldest cattle ranch, the Alkali Lake Ranch near Williams Lake, B.C. has been sold.

Long time Canadian owners, Doug and Marie Mervyn, recently announced that the Douglas Lake Cattle Company is the new owner and that the transaction, made privately between the two parties, has been in the works for a while.

Joe Gardner, general manager of Douglas Lake says, “We see this deal as a historic union of two old grassland cattle ranches. We look forward to ensuring its long-term future.”

Enos Stanley “Stan” Kroenke, an American businessman who, along with his wife, Wal-Mart heiress Anne Walton, each independently made the Forbes 400 Richest Americans list, currently owns Douglas Lake.

The Mervyns will continue to reside in their home on the Alkali and have retained some acreage along the river. Bronc Twan will remain as ranch manager. The Alkali calves will still carry the Lazy Cross brand while the Douglas Lake One-Eleven irons will remain down south.
