Canadian Farm Writers' Convention welcomes Cowboy Poets

Cowboy poet Mike Puhallo and singer songwriter Matt Johnston were the featured evening entertainers on October 4th, at the awards ceremony held at the conclusion of the Canadian Farm Writers' Convention in Kelowna, BC. The week-long convention included a series of agricultural tours, workshops and the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation.

The CFWF awards program honours the best in agricultural writing, in the mainstream media as well as farm and ranch-oriented publications. For many of the convention delegates from Eastern Canada, this was their first exposure to cowboy poetry and contemporary cowboy music - and they loved it!

For information on the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation, or further details on the convention and award show, visit their website at www.cfwf.ca.

Little Cowgirl Kicks-off Stampeder Football Game

Havey Robson, five year-old daughter of Jeff (a pro team roper) and Barb Robson, and granddaughter of cutting horse competitor Dave Robson, was recently Calgary's youngest anthem singer at a Calgary Stampeder Football game. On October 3rd, this bubbly sprite wowed the crowd with her rendition of O Canada. She entered the contest through CKRY Country 105, a Calgary radio station, and her essay was chosen from 150 entries in and around Calgary. With the help of her mom, Barb, Havey auditioned and conducted interviews with the local broadcaster, making her the chosen winner! But Havey's fame doesn't end at the Stamps game. On the weekend of October 18th, at the Mark Roy Challenge, Dean Tuftin, CCMA nominee from Drayton Valley, invited her on-stage to accompany him in the song 'Hangin' at the end of my Rope'. Havey, of course, was only too happy to oblige.

The Passing of George Haywood-Farmer
August 23, 1915 - October 8, 2003

A pioneer of B.C.'s ranching industry and member of the B.C. Cowboy Hall of Fame, George Haywood-Farmer passed away peacefully at 88 years of age. As a rancher and stockman, George was a leader in promoting good range management and environmental practices.

He served many years on the board of the BC Cattlemen's Association. In spite of the workload involved in running a large ranch, he was also heavily involved in his community as a 4-H leader and president of the Savona Community Association. George was a 4-H leader for 16 years and instrumental in establishing the public speaking programs that have served our rural youth so well over the last forty years. George made a point of doing things well. He rode good horses, trained good dogs, ran one of the best ranches in BC, yet always seemed to have time to put a little bit back. A great cowboy and rancher, George was also a teacher, mentor and pillar of our ranching industry - a true pioneer.

Cowboys pitch in to help with BC's Fire Relief Fund

The BC Cowboy Heritage Society and Kamloops Cattle Drive were co-hosts for a Cowboy Concert in support of The North Thompson Fire Relief Fund at Temple Church, September 20th, 2003. Admission for the concert was by donation and reached approximately $4000, with all proceeds to the North Thompson Relief Fund.

All entertainers and production staff donated their time. Entertainers' rooms were sponsored by The Best Western Towne Lodge and The Days Inn. Mike Miltimore of Lee's Music took care of the sound, Calvary Temple donated the venue and Cowboy Coffee donated the coffee and cups.

The show opened with Mike Puhallo reciting "Courage," a poem he penned in early August about the hardships faced by fire victims. What followed was an outstanding showcase of western entertainment featuring Hugh McLennan, Butch Falk, Matt Johnston, Dave Longworth, Bud Webb and the Outriders, Danny Mack, Tammy Gislasen, Mike Puhallo and, of course, Gary Fjellgaard who finished the show to a standing ovation, as he unveiled his new song, Raw Courage, which was inspired by Mike's poem. Gary has recorded Raw Courage as a single and he managed to get it produced and released with all costs sponsored. All proceeds from the sale of the CDs go directly to the Fire Relief. The CD sells for ten dollars and is available from Back Porch Music in Kamloops, (250) 828-2005; River City Nissan; and of course from Gary himself.
